Thunder and Lightning
We went for a long stroll including to Ka De We, the largest department store in Europe. The food halls were amazing and I discovered a chocolate I hadn't heard of before-Leysieffer-founded in 1909. Their stuff was displayed on a wall and I could have bought many bars, but we were walking and it's hot, so perhaps on another occasion before we leave on Saturday. We then went a long way down the Kurfurstendamm, which has lots of fancy shops including Villeroy and Boch.
On a side street there was a sign to some nearby Jewish historical site and we checked it out. There was no English to help us understand what we were viewing. There was a monument that listed all the concentration camps and the period 1933-1945. Even though Berlin has not many living Jews to speak of, the place was still guarded, with noticeable security. It's very eerie.
We also noticed a similar plaque outside of one of the subway stations on our route. Could that station have been a train station used in the deportations to the death camps?
After what must have been a couple of hours we (as in Kim) became tired and thirsty and couldn't find the right spot. Either there were no seats or everyone was smoking. So we just came back to our hotel courtyard for a snack and a drink. Right now there is thunder and lightning with a nice breeze but no rain as of yet. We have a full day tour tomorrow and it should be cooler, although there may be showers. All the major landmarks are on the agenda tomorrow and then on Thursday we have a tour of "Jewish Berlin" which seems to highlight the cemetery.
